Nearby the wreck-site, British ship HMS Birmingham swiftly mounted a rescue operation and a total of 673 of the 954 people on board were brought back to Bombay on November 27, 1942, with 281 losing their lives.

During 24 and 25 November 1942, HMS Birmingham (Capt. H.B. Crane, RN, flying the flag of Rear Admiral W.G. Tennant, CB, MVO, RN), picked up a total of 678 survivors from the transport Tilawa (British, 10006 GRT, built 1924) that had been torpedoed and sunk on 23 November 1942 by the Japanese submarine http://www.combinedfleet.com/I-29.htm>I-29 in position 07°36'N, 61°08'E.
At 0405DE(-4.5)/24, HMS Birmingham had altered course to proceed to the north-east to the sinking position after having been ordered to do so in a signal.
After picking up the survivors course was set to return to Bombay. (85)

(20 May 1957) HMS Birmingham, off Cannes and a launch took members of the British colony to a special reception on board. Waiting on deck to bid them welcome were producer Herbert Wilcox and his wife Anna Neagle. Also the star of the film about HMS Amethyst, Richard Todd. James Robertson Justice was among a number of film personalities enjoying the Naval occasion.
